Which Hair Extensions Must Come Out Before an MRI

You can get an MRI with some hair extensions, but extensions attached with metal beads, nano-rings, micro-rings, I-tips, flat-tips, or beaded wefts will generally need to come out unless the MRI facility specifically clears them. The main concern is radiofrequency heating of conductive metal near the scalp, along with image distortion—not simply the magnet pulling on the extensions. Tape-ins, keratin bonds, and thread-only sew-ins are more likely to remain, but the facility still has to approve them.

“Silicone-lined” does not mean metal-free. The lining may sit inside a conductive copper, aluminum, or other metal shell. A household magnet cannot establish MRI compatibility.

Metal-Bead Extensions Generally Need Removal

Nano-beads, micro-rings, micro-links, I-tips, flat-tips, and beaded volume wefts use small attachments close to the scalp. Those attachments may be copper, aluminum, another metal, or a metal shell with a silicone lining.

An April 9, 2026 MRI-safety report identified nano-bead, I-tip, flat-tip, and beaded volume-weft extensions as unsafe for MRI because their conductive components could heat during scanning. A June 2026 patient-safety tip sheet repeated the warning. The concern applies even when the bead is described as nonmagnetic or silicone-lined.

The practical distinction is whether the installation contains conductive hardware. A metal bead does not have to fly toward the scanner to cause a problem. MRI also exposes the body to radiofrequency energy, and conductive components can potentially heat. Closely arranged or overlapping beads near the scalp may create a more concerning configuration.

The precise risk has not been established for every alloy, bead arrangement, scanner, and imaging protocol. That uncertainty is why the MRI safety team—not the salon, extension supplier, or patient—makes the final decision.

A peer-reviewed case report described a woman scheduled for cervical-spine MRI under anesthesia who had numerous metallic microbeads near her scalp. A screening magnet did not identify ferromagnetism, but a metal-detection wand and x-rays confirmed numerous overlapping metallic beads. The extensions were professionally removed and the MRI was rescheduled. She was not injured because the hardware was found before scanning (metallic-microbead case report).

That case does not prove that every extension causes a burn. It shows why unidentified conductive hardware, numerous beads, a nearby scan region, and an inability to report discomfort require a cautious assessment.

Removal Depends on the Complete Attachment System

The name of the hairstyle is not enough. Two clients can both have “wefts” while one has a thread-only braided foundation and the other has rows of metal beads.

These are screening expectations rather than universal MRI classifications. Beaded Wefts, Nano-Rings, and Micro-Links

These methods place multiple clamped attachments in rows around the head. Report the bead material, number of rows, approximate number of attachments, and whether any beads overlap.

A beaded weft normally requires salon tools for removal. Do not try to pull or pry open the beads before confirming that removal is required. If the facility directs removal, book a stylist before the scan.

I-Tips and Flat-Tips

An I-tip is commonly threaded through a ring or bead and clamped. A flat-tip can also be installed with bead hardware. The extension hair itself is not the only concern; the MRI department needs information about the tip and the component holding it to the natural hair.

Sew-Ins

A traditional sew-in attached to braids with thread may have no intentionally added metal. A beaded sew-in or volume-weft installation uses beads as its foundation and should be treated as a metal-hardware method until the facility assesses it.

Tell the technologist whether the weft is sewn directly to braids or to bead-supported rows. Do not report only that you have a sew-in.

Clip-Ins

Clip-ins should be removed when directed before entering the controlled MRI area. Their clips may contain metal, and removal does not require opening semipermanent bonds.

Tape-Ins and Keratin Bonds

Adhesive-only tape tabs and keratin bonds may raise fewer metal-heating concerns if they genuinely contain no metal. “Tape-in” and “fusion,” however, are salon method names rather than MRI safety ratings.

Provide the brand and product name if available. Mention any clips, rings, decorative wires, or repair components added during installation. The facility may permit a confirmed metal-free system to remain while still considering whether it could affect images near the head or neck.

Silicone-Lined Beads Are Still Metal Beads

A silicone-lined bead normally has a soft inner lining surrounded by an outer shell. That shell may be copper, aluminum, or another conductive metal. The silicone protects the hair from the bead’s edge; it does not make the complete attachment metal-free.

Copper and aluminum may not react strongly to a household magnet, but that does not establish MRI safety. Conductivity remains relevant to radiofrequency heating, while any metal near the examined anatomy can create image artifacts. AuntMinnie’s safety discussion describes copper and aluminum as common conductive, nonferromagnetic bead materials and notes that some microbeads combine an inner silicone layer with a colored metallic exterior.

Do not use a refrigerator or jewelry magnet as clearance. A negative test does not prove that an attachment contains no metal, will not heat, will not distort images, or has been tested for the scanner being used.

The reported microbead case illustrates the limitation: a screening magnet did not identify ferromagnetism, yet a metal detector and radiographs established that the patient had numerous metallic beads.

Brain and Neck Scans Receive the Closest Scrutiny

Scalp attachments are closest to the anatomy during MRI of the brain, head, face, jaw, neck, and cervical spine. Metal can disrupt the local magnetic field and create artifacts that obscure nearby structures.

An extension can remain physically secure and still make the examination less useful. If an artifact conceals the structure the radiologist needs to evaluate, completing the scan does not produce an adequate diagnostic study.

The University of Pittsburgh Magnetic Resonance Research Center recommends not wearing nonremovable hair extensions for brain MRI (brain-MRI preparation guidance). That is a facility-specific policy rather than a rule for every imaging center, but it shows why head imaging may receive stricter screening.

For a knee, ankle, foot, pelvis, or another region farther from the scalp, hair-extension artifacts may be less likely to obscure the target. Distance does not automatically clear metal hardware. The extensions still have to be disclosed, and the MRI safety team may require removal because of heating, uncertain composition, or facility policy (conditional MRI risk discussion).

Sedation Makes Uncertain Hardware More Concerning

Tell the facility if you will receive sedation or anesthesia. A person who is asleep or significantly sedated may be unable to report warmth, burning, pain, or pulling during the scan.

Planned anesthesia was one reason the clinical team took a cautious approach in the published cervical-spine case. The unknown bead properties, numerous overlapping attachments, proximity to the scan region, and inability to obtain immediate feedback all mattered.

Remaining awake does not make metal attachments acceptable. It only preserves the ability to report symptoms. The facility must still consider the material, attachment pattern, scanner, protocol, scan region, and expected image quality.

Tell the MRI Department Before the Appointment

Call the scheduler or MRI department as soon as you know that the installation may contain hardware. Give them:

  • The exact method, such as I-tip with micro-rings or weft sewn onto beaded rows
  • The known or suspected bead, ring, clip, clamp, tip, or wire material
  • The brand, supplier, product name, packaging, or salon invoice
  • The location and approximate number of attachments
  • Whether the system requires professional removal
  • The body part being scanned
  • Whether sedation or anesthesia is planned

If the material is unknown, say so. Do not call a bead “silicone” merely because it has a silicone lining.

A useful script is:

Unknown Materials May Delay the Scan

Unknown composition is not evidence that an attachment is safe. First ask the stylist whether the installation includes beads, rings, clamps, links, clips, tips, or wire. Request a product name or material sheet if one exists.

Depending on its procedures, the MRI center may request documentation or perform additional screening. Not every center uses a metal-detection wand or radiography for hair extensions, and the published case is not a universal screening protocol.

If the facility cannot establish safety or expects the hardware to compromise the images, it may require professional removal, postpone the appointment while information is obtained, or reschedule the scan. The ordering clinician may need to discuss the appropriate next step with the imaging team.

Do not attempt semipermanent removal solely because of an online recommendation. Confirm the requirement with the MRI department, then have difficult attachments removed by a qualified stylist.

Removal and Reinstallation Costs Require a Salon Quote

Cost varies with the attachment method, number of rows or bonds, condition of the installation, local salon pricing, and whether the same hair can be reinstalled.

Ask the salon to quote removal and reinstallation separately. Clip-ins normally require no salon removal. Beaded wefts, nano-rings, micro-links, I-tips, flat-tips, tape-ins, keratin bonds, and semipermanent sew-ins may require professional work if the MRI facility says they must come out.

Repeat the Disclosure at Check-In

Even if the department approved a plan by phone, disclose the extensions again during screening. State the exact attachment method, point out where the attachments sit, identify any unknown material, and confirm whether sedation is planned.

Bring available packaging, receipts, manufacturer information, or stylist notes. Remove clip-ins and separate metallic hair accessories when instructed. Never enter the MRI room with an undisclosed clip, bead, ring, clamp, or wire.

The final decision belongs to the facility performing the examination. Confirmed metal-bead systems will generally need removal; confirmed metal-free tape, keratin, or thread-only systems may be allowed to remain. When the hardware is unknown, expect the MRI team to require more information or removal rather than relying on a home magnet test.
