How to Choose Hair Extensions for Curly Hair
Choose curly hair extensions by washed texture, visible length, attachment weight and upkeep. Compare temporary and installed methods before buying.
Choose hair extensions for curly hair by their washed, dried texture first, then by how they attach. A curl label or styled product photo is not enough to judge the blend. You also need to know how much length shows after shrinkage, whether your hair can support and conceal the attachments, and what maintenance you can realistically manage.
For occasional wear, start by comparing removable pieces. For continuous wear, compare the installation, scalp access, maintenance appointments and removal—not just the hair’s purchase price.
Match the curls you actually wear
Bring consultation photos of your hair fully dry in its usual style, without extensions. Include the back, sides and your normal part. If you regularly wear a wash-and-go, twist-out or stretched style, name that routine rather than asking only for “curly” hair.
Use these buying checks:
- Curl shape: Compare the size of spirals, waves or coils, not just a type number or names such as “deep wave” and “kinky curly.”
- Density and ends: Ask whether the proposed pieces will blend with your existing fullness and haircut. A longer, thicker set is not automatically a better fit.
- Color: Compare dry hair in daylight, including the ends that will sit beside the extensions.
- Post-wash behavior: Request photos or a video showing the hair washed, conditioned and fully dried, without a curling iron finishing the result.
- Testing and returns: Before washing, opening the full pack or cutting anything, confirm what the seller allows you to test without losing return eligibility.
Bebonia, for example, says its sets include a test weft for checking the match and recommends washing and styling the extensions before first wear to reactivate the curls. That makes the test policy worth checking before treating the entire set. Bebonia’s beginner guide
Confirm how length is measured. Perfect Locks measures its curly extensions stretched straight, so the labeled inches are not the length you see when the curls spring back. Ask for the relaxed, dry length of the exact texture and a placement photo; do not apply one shrinkage estimate to every curl pattern. Perfect Locks’ curly extension guidance
Also ask whether the curl is original to the donor hair or processed, and whether the hair is human, synthetic or a blend. “Human hair” is not blanket permission to bleach or recolor it: Indique’s Remix Coil Curl is dyed to 1B, and the manufacturer advises against coloring services on that collection. Compare attachment methods by your routine
Curly describes the texture, not the attachment system. The main options create different wear commitments:
| Method | How it attaches | What to settle before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Clip-ins | Small clips on wefts grip sections of your hair. | Can you conceal the clips and wear the selected weight comfortably? Consider these when you want to remove the pieces yourself after wear. |
| Halo | A wire supports a weft around the head, beneath your natural hair. | Test wire fit and coverage with your normal part and haircut. It needs an actual try-on, not just a matching curl photo. |
| Tape-ins | Adhesive tabs usually sandwich a section of natural hair. | Confirm root preparation, product restrictions, tab concealment and professional removal. |
| Sew-in or beaded wefts | A continuous weft attaches to a braided foundation or a beaded system. | Ask how you will cleanse and dry the scalp beneath the rows, and how their weight and placement will be assessed. |
| Individual bonds or I-tips | Individual extensions attach with heat-applied keratin bonds or beads, respectively. | Confirm strand placement, attachment care and whether maintenance means repositioning or removal and replacement. |
These attachment distinctions are illustrated in Perfect Locks’ installation guides. They do not establish that any method is safe or suitable for every curly-haired wearer.
Ask the stylist to show the proposed placement with your hair both down and in your usual tied-back style. If the blend depends on repeatedly straightening your own hair, decide whether that fits the routine you wanted.

Get the maintenance plan and full quote first
Request a written quote separating:
- Hair, including length, total grams and number of pieces or strands.
- Installation and blending cut.
- Any color work or preparation.
- Each maintenance visit, including removal and reapplication where relevant.
- Final removal, replacement hair and required care products.
An application’s wear time is not the hair’s total reusable life. As of October 2026, Great Lengths lists roughly four to six weeks for GL Tapes before removal and up to five months for its pre-bonded system. Both removal timeframes depend on the wearer’s hair condition and lifestyle; the company also says its tapes can be reused. These are system-specific estimates, not universal curly-extension schedules. Ask separately about any maintenance visits needed during an application. Great Lengths’ FAQ
To compare a year of wear, add the initial hair and installation, maintenance visits during that year, replacement hair, final removal and products. Ask when the first set is likely to need replacement rather than assuming it will cover the whole year. Our extension cost guide explains the difference between a hair-only price and a complete service quote.
Care for the curls without compromising the attachments
Keep two care tasks separate: conditioning and defining the lengths, and keeping the scalp and attachment areas clean and properly dried.
For its curly clip-ins, Bebonia recommends gentle cleansing, detangling with conditioner from the ends upward, applying leave-in and styler, and scrunching before drying. It also advises against sleeping or swimming in the pieces. Bebonia’s curly clip-in care guide
Installed hair needs additional rules. Perfect Locks advises keeping conditioner away from tape bonds and weft attachments, avoiding oils near tape bonds, and completely drying the braided foundation of a sew-in. Do not automatically carry a removable-piece soaking or deep-conditioning routine over to installed attachments. Perfect Locks’ method-specific care guidance
Before leaving the appointment, have the stylist demonstrate detangling without pulling on attachments and explain nighttime care. Get the exact system’s product and drying instructions in writing.
Pain is not a normal settling-in requirement. The American Academy of Dermatology advises changing a pulling hairstyle immediately if it causes pain, stinging, crusting or scalp tenting. Broken hairs, a receding hairline or patches of loss warrant attention; prolonged traction alopecia can become permanent. Seek a dermatologist for hair loss rather than covering it with more extensions. AAD guidance on traction alopecia
