How to Install Clip-In Hair Extensions, Step by Step

Learn how to section your hair, place and secure clip-in wefts, blend the lengths, fix slipping or visible clips, and remove your set gently.

Install clip-ins from the lower back of your head upward, then add the smaller side pieces. Attach each weft—the strip of hair carrying the clips—to your natural hair near the roots, leaving enough hair above it to cover the seam.

The exact layout depends on your set. Follow its placement guide where supplied; a two-clip piece in one brand may not be the same width as another.

1. Prepare your hair and lay out the pieces

Have these ready:

  • Your clip-in set
  • A tail comb and sectioning clips
  • A brush or comb suitable for the extension fiber
  • A main mirror and a second mirror for checking the back

Start with dry hair in the part you intend to wear. Detangle your own hair gently. Lay the wefts out by width and check that each clip opens and snaps closed.

Detangle each extension piece separately, working from the ends upward while supporting the seam. For curly or synthetic pieces, follow the maker’s detangling instructions rather than automatically brushing them out; HairUWear’s fiber-care guidance illustrates why different fibers and textures need different handling.

2. Make the first section at the lower back

Use the comb to make a horizontal part across the lower back of your head, near the nape. Clip the hair above it out of the way, leaving the lower layer loose.

Hold a weft against this section before attaching it. It should fit without its ends wrapping into areas where you cannot conceal or support the clips. Choose by width, not simply by clip count: Foxy Locks’ tutorial starts with a two-clip weft, while Luxy’s tutorial starts with three clips.

3. Secure the weft

For a three-clip weft:

  1. Open all the clips on the piece.
  2. Center the weft along the section.
  3. Slide the center clip’s teeth into your natural hair near the roots, then snap it shut. The clip grips hair; do not scrape it along your scalp.
  4. Secure the side clips, keeping the seam flat without pulling your hair tight.

For a four-clip weft, close the middle two clips first, then the outer ones. This center-out sequence follows Luxy’s application instructions. For a two-clip piece, fit it to the section and secure one clip, then the other—there is no center clip.

Check that the piece feels stable and comfortable before adding another. If it pulls, reopen the clips and reposition it rather than trying to tolerate the tension.

4. Work upward, leaving coverage at the crown

Release some hair and make another horizontal section roughly an inch above the first. Measure the next weft, then attach it using the same sequence.

Use wider pieces where the back of your head is widest and narrower pieces where they fit better. Leave natural hair between rows, and stop before you run out of hair to cover the upper seam. Luxy’s layout places its highest back weft about two inches below the crown, but treat that as a starting point—not a universal measurement. Check concealment on your own head.

You do not have to install every piece just because it came in the set.

5. Add the side pieces and check the blend

Make a horizontal section above one ear and clip the upper hair away. Fit a smaller weft beneath that hair, keeping it back far enough from the hairline to stay hidden. For a two-clip side piece, secure the clip nearest the hairline first, then the one toward the back. Repeat on the other side. Use single-clip pieces only where additional blending is needed and where you have enough hair to cover them.

Let all your hair down. Check the front, sides and back, then turn and tilt your head to look for exposed seams.

Match the extensions’ texture to your own hair. If heat styling is needed, check the set’s fiber and temperature instructions first, including whether it must be styled off the head; do not assume all synthetic hair is heat-friendly. If a blunt haircut still creates an obvious ledge, seek a stylist’s blending cut rather than adding more weight. Our short-hair extension fit guide explains those blending limits.

Fix problems before wearing them out

Problem What to change
A clip slides Reopen it, check that it caught hair near the roots and closes fully, then refit. Try a better-supported section if it still slips.
A seam shows Move the piece lower or farther back, or leave it out. Check again with your intended part.
The weft bulges Refit it center-first where the clip layout allows. If it is too wide for that row, choose a narrower piece.
The set feels heavy or pulls Remove pieces or remove the set; do not tighten the clips to compensate.

Pain is not a normal settling-in stage. The American Academy of Dermatology warns that repeated pulling can cause traction alopecia and advises changing a hairstyle immediately if it causes pain, stinging or scalp tenting. Seek a dermatologist’s advice if you notice hair loss.

Remove the set gently

Work from the upper pieces downward. Support each weft, open every clip fully, and ease the teeth out of your hair—never pull a closed clip through it. If it catches, stop and gently free any tangles rather than pulling harder. AiryHair’s removal instructions likewise advise opening all clips on a piece before removing it and stopping if it pulls.

Remove clip-ins before bed. Luxy advises against sleeping in its extensions because of discomfort and tangling. Detangle the removed pieces according to their care instructions. Close the clips and store the set completely dry, as recommended in Luxy’s storage guidance.
