Treat it as suspicious when the roots, strand behavior, object boundaries, lighting, and source history fail in several independent ways. The result is a consumer-level reality check, not a forensic finding. Artificial gloss, blurred roots, strange hands, warped jewelry, garbled text, or impossible density can justify further investigation, but none proves AI use by itself.

Northwestern University researchers who cataloged synthetic-image artifacts recommend considering anatomical, stylistic, functional, physical, and contextual inconsistencies together rather than treating one defect as decisive (Northwestern University’s explanation of AI-image artifacts).

A blurry part, for example, may come from compression or shallow focus. A blurry part combined with hair passing through an earring, malformed salon lettering, and incompatible shadows is harder to explain as one ordinary photographic problem.

Separate Generated Hair From a Generated Portrait

“AI-generated” can describe different kinds of images:

  1. A fully synthesized person, hairstyle, outfit, and setting.
  2. A real portrait in which AI changed the apparent hair length, volume, color, texture, bangs, or shape.
  3. A genuine extension photograph altered with conventional retouching, compositing, filters, or background replacement.
  4. An authentic result presented only from a flattering angle under ideal lighting.

A believable face and salon do not establish that the pictured extensions existed. Commercial virtual-hair tools can modify hair in an uploaded photograph while leaving the person and room intact (Perfect Corp.’s virtual hair-extension workflow). In that case, “likely partially AI-edited” is more accurate than calling the entire portrait fake.

AI use also does not establish deceptive intent. A stylist may use a labeled visualization during a consultation, or a client may bring one as conceptual inspiration. Image authenticity and the truth of a sales claim are separate issues.

Even a real photograph does not prove that the poster performed the work, that the advertised bundle provides the same density, or that the named extension method created the result. Ask two separate questions: what probably happened to the image, and what evidence supports the service or product attached to it?

Root Density Must Relate to a Real Scalp

Start at the part, scalp, roots, hairline, and head shape rather than the dramatic ends. Extensions must connect visually and physically to the wearer’s natural hair.

Follow several sections from near the scalp toward the ends. Their direction, width, texture, color, and focus should change coherently. Ordinary photographs will not preserve every strand, so the goal is not to trace each hair. The goal is to determine whether the hairstyle behaves like one physical material attached to one head.

Beauty professionals interviewed by Allure described unrealistic references with missing natural texture, artificial gloss, implausible density or tone, unrealistic roots, and color that does not respond naturally to light. Signs worth checking include:

  • a part that fades into a smooth patch without plausible scalp structure;
  • root directions that change abruptly without a curl, clip, tie, or styling explanation;
  • hair appearing to grow outside a believable hairline;
  • dense blocks that do not follow the shape of the skull;
  • roots much blurrier than facial features at the same distance;
  • a huge volume of long hair with no visible taper or plausible transition from the crown.

Root concealer, smoothing, low resolution, dense styling, wigs, movement, and shallow depth of field can produce some of these effects. Hidden attachment points are not an AI tell either. Styling and camera angles routinely conceal bonds, tapes, beads, or wefts.

Strand Physics Expose Impossible Length And Volume

Real hair responds to gravity, friction, styling, and contact with the body. It compresses against shoulders, separates around clothing, and usually loses some apparent density toward the ends unless the cut and installed quantity support a blunt finish.

Inspect whether waves repeat like copied shapes, texture suddenly simplifies, or isolated flyaways begin and end without joining the hairstyle. Compare shine on sections facing different directions. Highlights should follow the curvature of the hair rather than appearing painted across unrelated locks.

A dense, waist-length silhouette is not automatically synthetic. Skilled installation, a wig, substantial added hair, careful styling, or retouching can create extraordinary fullness. The warning sign is a contradiction: extreme length and end density paired with roots and side profiles that show no believable support for that volume.

A photograph still cannot reveal the required grams or rows. Those depend on the wearer’s starting density and length, the extension method, attachment size, desired perimeter, texture, cut, and the stylist’s placement plan. The researched material supplies no defensible universal conversion from a pictured silhouette to grams or rows, so any exact figure derived from the image would be invented.

Ears, Jewelry, Hands, And Clothing Reveal Boundary Failures

Trace every place where hair overlaps another object:

  • temples, cheeks, ears, and earrings;
  • neck, shoulders, collars, and straps;
  • glasses, clips, necklaces, combs, and salon tools;
  • chair backs, mirrors, walls, and the ends of the hairstyle.

Look for strands passing through solid objects, earrings losing their attachment points, hair and skin melting together, or a collar disappearing beneath a smeared edge. One poor boundary can come from motion blur, portrait-mode segmentation, compression, or background removal. Repeated failures involving unrelated objects carry more weight.

Hands, teeth, ears, clips, and tools provide additional checks. Missing parts, unusable handles, duplicated shapes, and objects fused to skin may indicate generation or heavy manipulation. Natural anatomy, poses, phone lenses, movement, dental work, and ordinary asymmetry can also look unfamiliar, so an unusual hand or ear is not a verdict.

Newer image systems have improved at rendering details that once failed predictably. Correct hands, readable lettering, or believable teeth do not authenticate a picture, just as one malformed finger does not prove it is synthetic (Global Investigative Journalism Network’s detection guide).

Lighting And Background Geometry Should Describe One Scene

Identify the apparent light sources, then compare highlights on the hair, face, jewelry, tools, and clothing. Different materials respond differently, but their highlights and shadows should still fit a compatible lighting arrangement.

For each cast shadow, identify the object that could produce it. A shadow should connect plausibly to that object and fall in a direction supported by the visible lights. Ring lights, windows, ceiling fixtures, softboxes, flash, and reflected light can create complicated results, so shadow differences matter most when the geometry remains inexplicable.

Check mirrors, counters, shelves, floorboards, chair arms, tiles, and window frames for coherent perspective. A mirror that cannot reflect the visible room, furniture legs occupying incompatible depths, or a counter changing angle may reveal generation, compositing, or another edit.

Text offers another cross-check. Inspect salon signs, product bottles, capes, labels, logos, and watermarks. Malformed characters or words that change style midway can raise suspicion. Defocus, glare, movement, and resizing can also make genuine text unreadable, while readable branding can be added after generation.

Ordinary Editing Can Mimic AI Artifacts

Real extension photographs can appear synthetic after beauty filters, skin smoothing, selective sharpening, color grading, background replacement, platform compression, screenshots, crops, and repeated reposting.

Use the highest-resolution version available. For each apparent defect, identify the ordinary photographic, styling, platform, or editing process that might explain it. Raise your confidence only when those alternatives fail or when source evidence points in the same direction.

Source History Is Stronger Than Visual Intuition

Save the best available copy rather than another screenshot. Record the original page, account, caption, posting context, and the claim attached to the image.

Run reverse-image searches using the full frame and separate crops of the face, hairstyle, and distinctive background. Look for the earliest credible upload, then compare hair length, color, jewelry, clothing, watermarks, and room details across versions.

An earlier portrait with the same face and room but shorter hair supports a partial hair edit more strongly than a claim that the entire scene was generated. A source may also identify the picture as stock imagery, a virtual try-on, an illustration, or a generated concept. No reverse-search match proves nothing. New, private, cropped, mirrored, recolored, or narrowly distributed images may not appear.

Review the posting account for consistent clients, rooms, tools, uniforms, process videos, tagged customers, root views, and before-and-after sequences. A new account is not automatically untrustworthy, and an established one may still repost misleading work. You are looking for a coherent record connecting the image to an actual installation.

Metadata can support a timeline, but it can be removed or changed. Screenshots, messaging apps, downloads, and social platforms often strip information, so missing camera data is not evidence of generation.

Content credentials and related provenance records may document declared information about an image’s origin and editing history. C2PA is one standard used to record digital-media provenance. Valid records can support an investigation, but their absence does not establish fakery (Truepic’s overview of image verification and provenance).

Detector Scores Cannot Authenticate Salon Work

AI-image detectors provide classifications or probability estimates, not definitive authentication. Beauty images are particularly difficult because smoothing, airbrushing, selective sharpening, rendered advertising, compression, background blur, and partial AI edits may influence the same patterns a detector evaluates.

The draft evidence provides no independent accuracy rate or hair-extension-specific validation for public detectors. A displayed percentage is not the tool’s general accuracy rate.

If a detector reports high AI likelihood but the stylist supplies an original file, process footage, and several matching views from the installation, the detector may be reacting to retouching or processing. A low score cannot prove that the image, seller, product, or claimed method is authentic.

For a costly dispute or an allegation carrying reputational consequences, preserve the original material and seek qualified forensic review rather than escalating an accusation from an automated score.

Bring Evidence-Based References To Your Consultation

Bring several minimally edited photographs rather than one flawless image. Include front, side, and back views, root or parting details, and before-and-after material where available. Examples from the chosen stylist’s own portfolio are more useful than an unattributed inspiration post.

Separate the desired result into length, density, texture or curl pattern, color, and overall shape. If an AI image captures the direction you want, label it as conceptual inspiration and ask which components can be reproduced on your starting hair.

Ask the stylist to assess:

  • your current length, density, condition, and haircut;
  • the extension method and attachment placement;
  • the hair texture and color work required;
  • the quantity and number of rows appropriate to your head;
  • whether the pictured end density can be supported safely;
  • the maintenance schedule and future reinstallation work.

A neutral verification request is enough: “Can you share front, side, back, and root close-ups or a short video in normal lighting, and confirm whether this is your own work?”

A refusal increases transaction uncertainty but does not prove AI use. Privacy restrictions, old files, or platform limitations may explain the gap. You can still decide not to rely on the image.

Describe uncertain findings proportionally: “Moderate suspicion of partial AI editing because of blurred roots, a merged earring, and an earlier version with shorter hair; not conclusive.” Do not accuse a stylist or seller of deception when the evidence supports only uncertainty.
