Micro Bead Hair Extensions: What to Know Before Booking

Learn how micro bead hair extensions attach, who should be cautious, and how move-ups, care and replacement hair affect the real cost.

Keisha Bell

Micro bead hair extensions usually mean individual extension strands secured to small sections of natural hair with beads, rather than glue or heat-fused bonds. You may also see them called I-tips, micro-links or micro-ring extensions. Their main trade-off is straightforward: the hair can be repositioned and reused, but you commit to regular salon maintenance—not months of unattended wear. BELLAMI’s I-tip guide describes move-ups every 6–8 weeks.

Before booking, confirm what the salon means by “micro bead.” Individual strands and a weft sewn onto a beaded foundation are different installations, even though both use beads.

How the attachment works

For a strand-by-strand installation, the stylist threads a small section of natural hair through a bead, inserts the extension tip into that bead, then clamps it closed. Bead and tip materials vary by system; BELLAMI, for example, describes polyurethane-tipped strands secured with copper flare beads. The attachment needs no installation heat or adhesive. BELLAMI

The names describe different parts of the setup:

  • I-tip: the slim tip at the end of an individual extension strand.
  • Micro bead or micro-link: the hardware securing the strand.
  • Micro-loop: a pre-looped variation of the beaded strand method. CK Studio Salon
  • Beaded weft: a strip of extension hair sewn onto a beaded foundation, rather than each extension strand being attached separately. Studio 417’s method menu

Individual strands allow targeted placement for fullness, length or color accents. They are not necessarily a quick appointment: BELLAMI estimates 1.5–3 hours for a full installation, while CK Studio estimates 2–4 hours. Ask whether the quoted appointment time also includes washing, color work and the blending cut. BELLAMI, CK Studio

Is your hair a suitable support—and can it hide the beads?

These are separate questions. Hair might cover the attachments while still being too fragile for the proposed weight. Conversely, a modest installation may be supportable but visible near a sparse crown or part.

At consultation, ask the stylist to explain:

  • The total grams and strand count proposed, including weight per strand.
  • Where the beads will sit and which areas will be left clear.
  • Whether the attachments stay covered with your usual part, hair tuck and comfortable ponytail.
  • How the extension texture matches your hair after washing, not only after a salon blowout.

Fine hair is not an automatic yes or no. CK Studio says it sometimes reduces strand count and attachment size for fine or fragile hair, but may recommend another method when crown coverage is insufficient. That is a salon’s fitting approach, not proof that beads are safe for every fine-haired wearer. CK Studio

“No glue” also does not mean “no damage.” The American Academy of Dermatology identifies overly tight extensions and weaves as potential causes of traction alopecia—hair loss from repeated pulling. If you already have thinning, unexplained shedding or scalp symptoms, get those assessed before adding attachments. AAD guidance

Move-up timing is not the hair’s lifespan

Keep two timelines separate:

Timeline What it means
Maintenance interval How long you wear the installation before professional repositioning and assessment
Reusable hair lifespan How long the extension hair remains suitable for further installations

BELLAMI recommends I-tip move-ups every 6–8 weeks and estimates 6–12 months of reusable hair life with proper care. Studio 417 schedules I-tip maintenance every six weeks, alternating a move-up with a reapplication. These are system and salon schedules, not a universal deadline. BELLAMI, Studio 417

At maintenance, beads are opened and the strands repositioned; ask whether your appointment includes clearing shed hair, replacing beads and assessing each supporting section. Removal is also a professional bead-opening procedure, not something to attempt with household pliers. CK Studio

What do micro bead extensions cost?

Compare itemized quotes, not a single advertised price. Ask for hair, installation, blending, move-ups, full reapplications, replacement hair and final removal separately.

Two public pricing pages checked on October 3, 2026 show why one national price band can mislead:

  • Studio 417, Springfield, Missouri: I-tip density installations start at US$550, and length installations at US$950; its installation prices include hair and installation. Move-ups start at US$130, and reapplications at US$260. The salon offers cash and card pricing, so confirm the applicable amount. Service menu
  • CK Studio Salon, Skokie, Illinois: reports typical full-head first-installation quotes of US$1,500–$3,500, depending on hair grade, density and length. That is the salon’s own range, not a national average. I-tip pricing guide

The ongoing arithmetic matters. Using Studio 417’s listed starting prices, a US$950 length installation plus four US$130 move-ups and four US$260 reapplications gives an illustrative subtotal of US$2,510. Those eight maintenance visits fit a six-week schedule through week 48.

That is only a scheduled-service subtotal, not a complete first-year quote: it excludes replacement hair, consultation, customizations, final removal and other applicable charges, including any payment-related difference. The salon itself estimates 8–10 months of I-tip hair life, so replacement may fall within that first year. Studio 417

Care between appointments

Follow the instructions for your exact hair and bead system. BELLAMI’s guidance provides a useful starting routine:

  • Detangle gently: support the hair below the attachment while working from the ends upward. Do not force a brush through knots.
  • Wash downward: avoid piling or scrubbing the lengths on top of your head.
  • Keep conditioner and oils off the attachment points: condition the mid-lengths and ends instead.
  • Dry roots and attachments completely: do not tie up or sleep on damp installed hair.
  • Secure the lengths loosely at night: avoid tight styles that pull on the attachments. BELLAMI Care Center

For curls or coils, ask for a texture-specific detangling demonstration, including whether to detangle dry or damp. BELLAMI generally advises dry brushing and says to avoid brushing wet hair unless your stylist directs otherwise for your method. Care Center

Do not wait for the next scheduled move-up if the installation hurts. Pain, stinging, crusting or scalp “tenting” warrant an immediate change to the pulling style—contact the installer promptly for professional adjustment or removal. Broken hairs, a receding hairline or patches of loss warrant dermatology advice. Traction-related hair loss can become permanent if left untreated. AAD

Before paying a deposit, leave with a placement plan, a written maintenance schedule and a quote that distinguishes reusable hair from recurring salon labor.
